Mangold was born in Heidelberg in 1971 and took literary studies and philosophy at university in Munich and Bologna. He is the literary editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (South German newspaper).

In September 2007 the journalist Ijoma A. Mangold received the Berliner Preis für Literaturkritik.
