2010 dates and supporting programme

Talks on Ingeborg Bachman

An event held by the University of Klagenfurt Robert Musil Institute and the Klagenfurt City Culture Department.

Introduction and reading by Heinz Bachmann:

KRIEGSTAGEBUCH (War Diary)

"It's the most wonderful summer of my life, and even if I grow to be a hundred years old, this will always be the most wonderful spring and summer. Everyone says you can hardly notice that peace has come, but for me, this is peace, peace!"

In 1945, immediately after the war has ended, the eighteen-year-old Ingeborg Bachmann notes down these lines in her diary. They speak of her abhorrence of the National Socialist ideology and her relief that the Nazi regime is over. There is another reason for the euphoric tone: Ingeborg Bachmann has fallen in love with a British soldier named Jack Hamesh, a Viennese Jew who had managed to emigrate in 1938.

Heinz Bachmann, Ingeborg Bachmann's brother, presents this unique document and reads accounts from his younger years, complemented by comments from his parents and his sisters.
