Festival of German-Language Literature
The Festival of German-Language Literature has been hosted in Klagenfurt, the birthplace of writer Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973), since 1977.
Currently, 14 authors read their texts and compete for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize worth 25,000 euros. Four additional prizes are also awarded, including an audience prize that is exclusively awarded via the Internet.
The authors’ readings will be broadcast live on the Internet and on 3sat.
The videos will also be available afterwards on the Internet.
Participation
Authors submit an unpublished work of prose directly to the jury
Schedule
The jury will discuss
the readings in front of an audience and television cameras.
The authors themselves read their texts to the audience and the jury. Immediately following the reading, the jury publically discusses the text in the author’s presence.
Jury
The jury is currently made up of seven members from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Each jury member nominates two authors for participation in the competition.
All readings and jury discussions will take place in the ORF Theatre of the Landesstudio in Klagenfurt.
Finding
The award winner: the jury determines the award winner publicly and by open ballot. Each jury member has one vote. A round of voting is won by the author who receives the majority of votes. The four awards allocated by the jury require a simple majority, that is, four out of seven votes.
Live TV coverage
3sat has been broadcasting all readings, discussions and the award ceremony live since 1989.
Internet
Online, you can find all readings and discussions as a live video stream and as a video on demand. The application texts, summaries of the jury discussions, participants’ biographies and background information are available as text for reading and for download.
Bachmann-Preis goes Europe
All application texts go online at the same time as the readings take place in the ORF Theatre, in eight different languages: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Czech, Slovenian and Croatian.
